Calling all student poets: Take your imagination on a journey

Do you have budding young poets in the family? Find out how they can take part in ISV's popular Student Poetry Competition

Calling all young poets – entries are now open for our annual Student Poetry Competition.

We’re inviting young people from across Victoria to express themselves in our celebration of poetic creativity.

Go on a journey

You could choose your own theme or explore our 2023 optional theme of ‘Journeys’.

The journey can be physical or metaphorical.

Ralph Waldo Emerson is credited with the quote, ‘Life is a journey, not a destination’, while Winnie the Pooh declared, ‘Life is a journey to be experienced, not a problem to be solved’.

After its popular debut last year, we again have the category of Performance Poetry. Students can enter a written poem and/or make a video of themselves speaking or performing their words, bringing energy and conviction to their work.

The competition is presented by Independent Schools Victoria (ISV), as part of its Arts Learning Festival program. It’s open to all Victorian primary and secondary students, regardless of school.

In the video below, celebrated children’s author and illustrator Gabrielle Wang (Australian Children’s Laureate 2022-23) explores her love of reading, writing and story to inspire students for this year’s Student Poetry Competition.
