In a world still cloaked in gender stereotyping, the need to empower young women to envision a life of limitless possibilities is critical.
Research led by a professor at Australian Catholic University reveals that by the early years of primary school, gender stereotypes have already influenced children, often leading them to aspire to “traditional” female and male jobs. We must therefore invest in our young women ensuring they have the support and opportunities to shape their futures. We must encourage them to be unstoppable.
An unstoppable girl is optimistic, resilient and curious. She is unafraid to take on challenges, step out of her comfort zone, and pursue her passions with determination and grit.
Here’s how you can raise an unstoppable girl.
Introduce role models and encourage varied Interests
To inspire change, action must start small and begin early. Introduce your daughter to females who have excelled in various fields. Spotlighting women leaders and change-makers illustrates that it’s possible to pursue any passion regardless of gender. Role models like Sam Kerr, Jacinda Ardern, and Sarah Gilbert – who co-developed the Oxford–AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine – are all good examples of women who have challenged norms with great success.
Support your daughter in a wide range of hobbies and interests, regardless of whether they are considered traditionally feminine or masculine. Encourage her to explore her true interests without the constraints of gender stereotypes.
Promote self-confidence, challenge the media and break the STEM cycle
Praising efforts, abilities, and accomplishments is an effective way to build self-confidence and encourage young women to push beyond perceived limitations. Focus on effort and dedication rather than just results. Celebrate resilience and determination, especially when challenges are overcome.
Discuss media portrayals of gender and encourage critical thinking. Ask questions about why certain roles or behaviours are depicted in specific ways and how they might affect perceptions. Help your daughter understand how media can perpetuate stereotypes and teach her to critique these messages.
Introduce your daughter to STEM-based activities and conversations. Select topics she’s interested in to ignite her curiosity and build her confidence in STEM fields.
Lead by example and let her be herself
Model gender equality through your actions and choices. Show your daughter you reject gender stereotypes by expressing your own personal style freely and demonstrating equal partnership in relationships.
Allow space for judgement-free self-expression. Whether she wants to experiment with her personal style or form friendships with diverse individuals, encourage her to be herself. Listen to her hopes and aspirations without imposing limitations based on gender.
By fostering an environment that encourages critical thinking, self-expression, and equality, you’ll help your daughter to develop the tools she needs to become truly unstoppable.
